Entrepreneur and business owner

Business Coaching for the Entrepreneur, Solopreneur and the Self Employed

In this country, we have a very romantic tradition of the typical entrepreneur and small business owner. We tend to think of business owners in the same way we think of our cultural heroes. We picture the entrepreneur defying insurmountable odds, struggling, suffering, working night and day doing whatever it takes only to emerge in the end victorious and rich. The picture frequently embraces extra human efforts and a prodigious commitment to larger than life ideals. The entrepreneur is a rugged individualist and an optimist (right after those next two clients come in next month our worries are over).

As Business Coach I recognize all too well that clients who have been bitten by the entrepreneurs’ bug, are frequently find themselves in a condition where:

  • The vision is gone.
  • The zest for the struggle has disappeared.
  • Financial and management challenges they never imagined are overwhelming.
  • Exhaustion is common, exhilaration rare.
  • Creativity and strategic planning is stifled by having to attend to the needs of today.

How do entrepreneurs get in that condition? Most people get the idea to start a business when they were working for someone else doing a job that required special expertise. One day they are struck with an idea – why do this for someone else? Operating under the assumption that just knowing the production or technical work of a business or being a top sales producer or a brilliant marketing strategist is the single greatest liability for any business!

To be successfull,l the entrepreneur must learn how to make the business work, rather than how to do the work better. That’s where coaching comes in. Entrepreneurs can learn the things they need to know to run a business and become a Business Owner rather than living out the perpetual romantic script of the struggling Entrepreneur.

At the same time, simply owning a business without the passion and creativity inherent in the entrepreneur’s makeup is not the answer either. How do you strike a balance of good business practices?
